This remote part is inhabited by Tibetans and Qiang peoples for centuries. Before 1975, this inaccessible area was poorly known. The area was the site of a logging extended until 1979, when the Chinese government prohibited such activity and made the area a national park in 1982. The site was opened to tourism in 1984, facility development and regulations being completed in 1987.

Tibetans inhabiting the valley differ from those of neighboring areas about their traditions, their costumes and language. Seven of the nine Tibetan villages are still inhabited today.
